Description The Halkidiki region is widely known as a Greek secret paradise with rocky bays, green hills, mountains and 500km of sandy beaches. The diversity of Halkidiki`s landscape and history gives each of its three peninsular its own distinctive characteristics. Kassandra offers superb variety, with great beaches, significant archaeology and friendly welcome. Sithonia displays similar beauty in its villages and its coastline, while Mount Athos remains a religious haven where monks dwell in Byzantine monasteries and visitor numbers are strictly regulated.
Halkidiki's recorded history stetches over 28 centuries. The peninsula takes its name from the ancient city of Chalkis (today's city of Chalkida in the island of Evia), which was the first to colonize Halkidiki in order to mine and exploit the rich gold mines of the area. These mines were the reason for continuous disputes over the dominance of the area by every major military power, including the Athenians, the Spartans, the Macedonians, the Romans and later the Ottomans. Many cities were founded and levelled in the area during the course of these troubled time, giving Halkidiki the rich archaeological heritage we see today.
The local village of Nea Skioni is just three kilometres away and offers a perfect opportunity to sample a taste of Greek village life. Said to have been founded by the Pelleneans on their way back from the War of Troy, Nea Skioni boasts a quayside lined with fishing boats and a selection of excellent restaurants. Located between the blue waters of the Aegean and the green trees of a pine forest, a walk or a mountain bike ride is the ideal way to appreciate the beauty of this corner of Greece. A little further afield, Mount Athos is one of Halkidiki's most prestigious places. For centuries, it has been a major religious site for Christians, some of its famous monasteries dating back to the early years of Christianity. To this day, women are not permitted to enter the domain of Mount Athos, whose monks live according to their own laws and independent authority.
Leaving Halkidiki, Thessaloniki awaits nearby on the Greek mainland. The second largest city in Greece, Thessaloniki's vibrant, cosmopolitan reputation combines with its cultural and historical sights to make it an ideal place for exploring Greek culture both old and new.
