Description The islands of Tonga are scattered across a 425km stretch of the South Pacific, 1500 miles North East of New Zealand, just below the Tropic of Capricorn. Just 37 islands are inhabited, leaving the rest untouched as intriguing treasures to discover during your holiday. It is a fascinating land of brilliant colours, blue lagoons, fine white sandy beaches and lush green coconut plantations.
Wind and Sailing Conditions Light, steady trade winds blow in a south-easterly direction at a constant 13-18 knots all year round, with a tidal range of just 1 metre, making sailing here a delight. There are occasional strong, north west winds, which normally shift to the south within twelve hours.
Dining Ashore Feasting plays a major role in the Tongan lifestyle. All meats (traditionally pork) and vegetables are cooked slowly in an Umu - traditional earth oven, this is a deep hole with coconut husks and leaves to give it the unique flavour. You'll find up to 30 different dishes on a Pola, a long tray made from plaited coconut fronds.
